Princess Katie & Racer Steve - Cookie Magazine Review!

Driving Rhythms
Don’t be fooled by the appearance of these cartoon characters come to life: This is one kids’ band that really knows how to rock.

Their getups may make them look like they’re moonlighting from amusement -park jobs, but Princess Katie and Racer Steve are no toddler-only joke. Along with Judo Champ Billy on bass and Crash the drummer, these guys are a serious rock-and-roll band--one that wouldn’t sound out of place opening for any current chart topper. You’ll get no artificial perk or childlike pitch from Katie’s decidedly adult singing voice, she sings FOR kids, not like them.

Her vocals are an appropriate accompaniment for Racer Steve’s masterful guitar shredding: The solo on "Sneakers" might make you wonder if his last name is Van Halen. The subject matter may be kid stuff, but the woman in the toy tiara and the guy in the faux-NASCAR gear are smart enough not to play down their audience.

FAST & FEISTY PARENTING MAGAZINE'S FAVORITE MUSIC FOR APRIL 2008!

Dear Diary:

We're really excited to announce that our new CD, Fast & Feisty has been chosen as Parenting Magazine's Pick for their Favorite Music in their April 2008 issue. Thus,

"Katie and her talented band will win your kids over, even if they usually resist anything princessy. The danceable music ranges from alt-rock to bossa nova, and Katie's earthy voice is a dead ringer for Natalie Merchant's."

Thank you Parenting! We feel very honored to be a favorite of such a cool magazine!

Princess Katie & Racer Steve's NY Post Review!

Darlin' Diary:

Nothing like waking up to read the paper and see you're in it! Fun!

Saturday's NY Post had a great article on the latest must-hear music. Here's what they said about Fast & Feisty:
"Opening with a swinging jazz tune about holidays titled (you guessed it) "Holidays," Princess Katie & Racer Steve show that this is not your average kids' album. They proceed to blast through the metal-influenced "Sneakers," the loungey pop number "The Pillow," soulful, funky vibes of "Hot Shot" and more. The album is also peppered with some skits about jumping and dragons, entering genres usually not explored on children's albums."

Nice, huh?

Sunday's Chelsea Market show was so much fun and we thank all of the families for making it out in the cold and slushy show. Hope it wasn't too crowded for ya'll!

See you on March 8th if you live in MA (see shows section for details on this show) and March 16th if you live in NYC at the Bowery Poetry Club!

Off to the gym, I remain,

Kiddie Rocker Princess Katie & Her Royal Pets!

Dear Darling Diary:

I have been asked to be a guest blogger for Hilltown Families. Here is my latest post about my pets:

For the most part, Kingdom life is great. There’s not much that we don’t have here. Sure, it’s beyond damp, there’s always some kind of incurable disease going around and you can’t exactly be sure if you’re going to be sitting on the throne from one day to the next, but generally, we’ve got a pretty decent set up here and there’s little left to be desired… except for maybe one thing, a normal pet relationship.

“A normal pet relationship?” you ask, “Why, pray tell!” Well, I bet you take it for granted that you can nuzzle your cat or dog, or that they’ll run and lovingly jump into your arms when you call them. You should know that not every owner/pet relationship is like that. The mere thought of being able to have one of my pets sleep at the foot of my bed or jump into my arms after a short sprint is both thrilling and highly unlikely. If I have my pet jump into my arms I’m at risk of having a 2-foot gold spike implanted in my forehead.

I own a rare winged unicorn. His name is Pointy.

Yeah, yeah, lucky me, I’ve heard it all before, but it’s not what you think. You’re thinking of the winged unicorn as a white horse with wings who flies towards rainbows and has a big beautiful glistening golden horn proudly mounted in the middle of its forehead; a mythical creature who gives off the sound of a bell tree when it opens its wings. Well, some of that is indeed true, but mainly, this creature is absolutely insane. Although Pointy has a nose and mouth, he, for whatever reason, chooses to use his incredibly sharp horn as an antenna of sorts. So, whenever he’s curious about anything, he’ll take a running start, head pointed downward, spike ready to investigate. I always know when he’s gotten out of his stable because the piercing screams of “Run! Pointy the Impaler is out!” usually give it away. Ah, yes, no one can clear a town quite like Pointy.

I’m stating the obvious when I say that Pointy has got about as much of a chance of sleeping at the foot of my bed in this lifetime as a snowball has on a hot plate.

My other pet’s name is Starla. She’s the “pet o’ choice” for princesses. In fact, unless you own one of these little critters, you’re not really considered to have “arrived” as a princess. Snow White has one, Cinderella has one and even cooler-than-thou Princess Fiona has one.

Starla is what we call a “Fairy Tale Tweeter.” That’s the name of the company that every princess you’ve ever known has ordered from.

Fairy Tale Tweeters is a company that sells those little birds that casually fly over and perch themselves on the index finger of a princess as she begins to sing. They gaze lovingly at the princess and whistle in perfect tune along with her.

Now, it may appear as though these little birds live in the forest and just kind of magically appear, ready to whistle along with anyone who dons a hoop skirt and tiara. But that’s not the case at all. These birds are put through intense whistle/perch training and getting one takes about 18-20 weeks. You thought getting the Wii was tough? Heh! Cabbage Patch Dolls? A cinch! Fairy Tale Tweeters takes the cake on “impossible to procure accoutrements.” Highly trained to match their tweet to your voice, you’ll have to fill out a 78- page form answering such questions as

1. Are you a falsetto, soprano or alto?
2. Color scheme of your dresses? (Birds are custom-dyed to match)
3. Will this be a forest bird or one for indoor/windowpane use?
4. Will there be other mythical creatures singing along?

Anyway, I guess the bottom line is that no matter how much “stuff” you have or what your title is in life, nothing matches the thrill that we all get from a cuddle with a pet or some time spent with a child.

Oh, and before I go, do me a favor…the next time you call Spot over from across the lawn, imagine him having a 2 foot gold spike coming out of that cute little forehead and let me know how fast you start running!

PRINCESS KATIE & RACER STEVE'S CONCERT TODAY WAS PAAAAAAACKED!

Dear Diary:

Today's show was PACKED! I could not believe my eyes. There was just rows and rows of kids and parents smushed up against one another, kids climbing on parent's shoulders, other kids trying to climb on those kids, parents climbing over kids...you get the idea...it was nuts!

We promise to make the next concert at Chelsea Market in the back near the 10th Avenue entrance. It was 24 degrees in NYC this morning and to have such a turnout was just remarkable...how did you all get out of your cozy beds to make a concert at 10:30 am? Pray tell!

We had an amazing concert with you all and hope you had fun!

On another note, I've posted another blog at Hilltown Families giving a little insight into life in the Kingdom. Click the title of this post to read it!

Thank thee kindly for attending and check the "shows" section of our site for upcoming shows!

PRINCESS KATIE & RACER STEVE'S SNEAKERS CONCERT

Dear Darlin' Diary!

Today was fantastic. We had a packed house for our CD Release Concert for Fast & Feisty and I must say that between the racing flags, glow sticks, costumes, flashing lights, signs and PKRS Wheel of Rock, there was so much to do and see. It was a great show and so much fun to perform the new music!

This coming Sunday (January 20th) we're going to be at the Chelsea Market for a free show! We're having a sneakers concert to celebrate our new song, Sneakers!

The show starts...well, I just tell ya everything....

Sunday, January 20th
10:30 am
PKRS SNEAKERS CONCERT
Chelsea Market
75 9th Avenue
(15th & 16th Streets)
NYC

We're really excited because we've been getting really nice reviews about our CD, Fast & Feisty! Check out what Cool Mom Picks had to say:

Royally Rocking
Right now, with writers striking and award shows canceling, we're in need of some good entertaining. Thank goodness for Princess Katie & Racer Steve stepping in to save the day by pre-releasing Fast & Feisty, a fast (and feisty) tribute to all that's great about kids music.

The album features ten songs and four skits of pure musical goodness. Songs like Holidays swing, Sneakers rocks, The Pillow cha cha chas, while Go Go Go! uh, goes. And all the while, lead singer Princess Katie (nee Kathleen O'Sullivan) sings her big heart out with her perfected Natalie Merchant sound sprinkled with swirlies of Diana Krall, Edie Brickell and The Sundays. Yeah, that's right. I said The Sundays.

Don't let the cartoon character concept scare you. This is a seriously great band. Plus, I hear they are fantastic live performers. Fantastic live performers who are currently allowed to perform without crossing a picket line. -Laura, Cool Mom Picks!

PRINCESS KATIE & RACER STEVE GET TO ROCK SPARE THE ROCK!

Dear Diary:

Oh, excuse me while I take off my cool radio headset! Yes, you heard right...my RADIO headset!

Bill, Ella & Liam of Spare The Rock, Spoil The Child, have asked Racer Steve and I to guest DJ on their ultra-cool kids' music radio station (Valley Free Radio • 8 to 10 am Saturdays • Northampton, Mass. • 103.3 FM).

The show is online now and we're really excited because it was so much fun to do and a huge honor. If you don't know about Spare The Rock, I suggest you click the title of this post and get hip...QUICK!

Being that we're usually so busy either writing, recording or performing our own music, it's not often that we get the opportunity to listen to other kids' musicians out there. It was great to listen around and come up with a playlist.

Big thanks to the Childs' family for letting us host and be sure to listen in!

Mixin' and scratchin', I remain,

Princess Katie, Princess, Singer, Songwriter, Moat Cleaner, DJ*
